Betty Bowler – Pattern Parcel 7
We’ve made it to Pattern Parcel #7! And it’s the last parcel of the year with one of my favorite things to sew- handbags. When I saw the list of patterns this time, I knew what I needed to make. And I already had the pattern. The Betty Bowler by Swoon Patterns.
This parcel somewhat brings everything back around for me. I bought this domain name in 2006 after making a purse for my mom and mother in law and falling in love with the concept of sewing purses. I love the process of making fabric dimensional and carrying my art with me in a way that is different from garment sewing. But then I somewhat fell out of it for awhile, until Swoon Patterns debuted.
I followed Alicia from the beginning when she started as Paco Bean, but Betty was the very first Swoon pattern I finally made during the sew along last winter. I gave that Betty away to a dear friend, and I’ve been hoping for another slot in my schedule to make one since.
But where does one tote a big bag like Betty on a daily basis? I’ve scaled back from the days when I brought the world with me to go anywhere with three kids. So I decided to make this Betty as an overnight bag for my smallest girl. She’s 5 (and a half!) and getting so independent and thoughtful of what she wants. So much so that this fabric was not allowed to be clothes. The fabric is the Wee Wander line from Sarah Jane Studios and Michael Miller Fabrics. I thought that the large panel piece on Betty would give great real estate to the magical border print in this line.
I love the modern and professional design of Betty. She’s also designed with a front pocket for access to important little things. Inside is an open pocket and another zippered pocket. Ellie will be able to stash all her things for trips to Grandma’s inside.

How Pattern Parcel Works:
Here at Perfect Pattern Parcel, we believe in supporting independent pattern designers. It’s our opinion that indie patterns are just, well, better than big box patterns, and we’re pretty sure our customers think so too. So, we allow customers to show their support in naming their own price for each Parcel. We also encourage customers to allocate part of their Parcel price to the charity Donorschoose.org in order to help classrooms in need. Pattern Parcel donates all profits after expenses from Parcel sales to the charity as well. It is our goal to raise over $20,000 for Donors Choose this year.
